Join us at Ararat Gallery TAMA to launch a new purpose-built gallery devoted to presenting excellence and innovation in textile.  We are honoured to launch this new space with an exhibition by leading textile art innovator, Sarah crowEST

Presented in association with Craft as part of its Craft Forward series, Material Constructs: The Home Stretch features new work by Sarah crowEST, in response to two earlier textile artworks acquired from the artist in 1995 and 2013.  A leader and innovator in textile art, crowEST’s work operates in the gaps between geometric abstraction, hand-crafted apparel and the expanded field of ‘painting’. Craft Forward is a touring exhibition program that commissions a leading Victorian maker to partner with a significant regional gallery and develop a new body of work in response to works previously acquired by that gallery.

In recent months Sarah has engaged with ten members of our community through her project, Material Constructs: a co-production of Utilitarian Abstract ApparelThe participants have selected and regularly worn aprons to communicate and collaborate with the maker, Sarah crowEST, on the life and direction of the garment. The exhibition opening of Material Constructs: The Home Stretch will bring these aprons into the gallery and its adjacent public space through a Peregrination (a costumed walk).  Additional aprons will be available for those who would like to join the Peregrination.
